The hits keep coming for House Republicans.

Multiple sources say appointed Rep. John Egofske (R-Lemont) will not seek a full term in the House next year. Egofske, who is also Mayor of Lemont, was appointed in February to replace former House GOP Leader Jim Durkin, who resigned in January.

Egofske is a retired corporate Chief Financial Officer who was elected Mayor of Lemont in 2017 and re-elected in 2021. He and Rep. Brad Stephens (R-Rosemont) are the only two House Republicans to represent any of Cook County.

Egofske did not raise any money last quarter and reported $0 in his campaign account on June 30.

UPDATE (9:40 P.M.): Egofske just texted to say he’s still undecided.

The latest departure comes just days after learning Rep. Mike Marron (R-Fithian) won’t seek re-election putting his Champaign-area district into pure tossup status. Meanwhile, seven Republicans (including Marron), who represent districts President Biden won in 2020, reported poor fundraising efforts in the second quarter of the year.

Republican gubernatorial candidate Darren Bailey won Egofske’s district by about three percentage points last year. President Trump won the district by two points in 2020.

The district runs from Homer Glen to the south to Western Springs in the north and includes all or parts of Lemont, Darien, Burr Ridge, and Willowbrook. Democrats were expected to make a run at the seat next year and an open race makes a well-funded Democratic candidate all the more likely.
