Embattled Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx announced Tuesday she won’t seek re-election in 2024.

Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx, who earned a reputation as a prosecutor who didn’t prosecute crimes, announced Tuesday she won’t seek re-election in 2024.
Her decision came as a surprise in some circles after progressive Brandon Johnson won the Mayor’s race earlier this month.
Foxx has become a punching bag for Republicans and the media during her first seven years in office, especially after multiple instances of her office declining to charge people who continued to commit repeated crimes.
NBC5’s Mary Ann Ahern reported Tuesday former City of Chicago Inspector General Joe Ferguson, former Cook County Commissioner Richard Boykin, and former First Assistant State’s Attorney Dan Kirk are all interested in the job.
State legislative politics have been a stepping stone to countywide office in recent years. Sheriff Tom Dart (House and Senate), Circuit Clerk Iris Martinez (Senate), and County Clerk Karen Yarbrough (House) all served in Springfield before being elected countywide.
But it doesn’t appear there are any Democrats in Springfield openly weighing a bid at this point.
The race will likely dominate the 2024 primary season in the Chicago area, potentially moving some high-profile Democratic races farther left.
