Sources tell The Illinoize Supreme Court Justice Michael Burke, a Republican from Elmhurst, will announce his campaign for the new 3rd Supreme Court District Monday in DuPage County.

Burke, a former Assistant State’s Attorney in DuPage County turned Circuit Judge and Appellate Judge, was drawn into the new 3rd District in the Democratic remap of the court in May. The new 3rd includes DuPage, Will, Kankakee, Iroquois, Grundy, LaSalle, and Bureau counties, nearly all of which is new territory for the justice who has served on the court since being appointed last year.

It likely sets up a high profile, expensive race with former Democratic State Representative and current Appellate Judge Mary K. O’Brien of Essex in Kankakee County, who previously represented much of the southern portion of the district.

We’ve requested an interview with Burke and will update when we speak with him.
