The Irvin/Bourne ticket leaves Republican venture capitalist Jesse Sullivan as the only candidate yet to announce a running mate.
The Illinoize checked in with Sullivan’s campaign Tuesday and they aren't talking.
A gubernatorial candidate can't circulate petitions until both candidates are on the form, though if you wait until the last day to file (which some like to do), they have until March 14 to collect 3,250 valid signatures. Realistically, they want to file closer to the maximum allowed of 6,500 instead of the minimum.
We’re told the Sullivan team thinks they have plenty of time to do plenty of vetting and offer the gig to the best person.
People close to the campaign say much of the discussion recently has centered on Sen. Sue Rezin (R-Morris) as Sullivan's running mate. It isn't clear if she's been offered the job, or even if she would take it. Sullivan's path to the nomination got a lot more complicated this week thanks to the money supposedly behind the Irvin campaign.
“They need a strong, suburban female with significant policy chops,” said a Republican insider. “Sue isn't from the suburbs, but she's close, and she checks all the other boxes perfectly. She should be at the top of the list.”
Rezin didn't return calls or texts from The Illinoize.
Sources say we'll hear something from the Sullivan campaign in the next week or two.
