State Rep. Sue Scherer (D-Decatur) tells The Illinoize she will not seek an appointment to the Senate seat vacated over the weekend by Sen. Andy Manar (D-Bunker HIll). Manar, who is behind Scherer in this 2016 photo, resigned to take a job with the Governor’s office.

State Representative Sue Scherer (D-Decatur) says she will not seek an appointment to the State Senate.

Scherer had been considering the appointment to replace Sen. Andy Manar (D-Bunker Hill), who resigned this weekend to take a job with the Governor’s office. Scherer, a retired teacher, has represented half of Manar’s Senate district since 2013. It includes portions of Decatur and Springfield.

Scherer said by text Monday night she is “focusing on my constituents who need me more now than ever with all that is going on and the hardships they are facing.”

The appointment for the two years remaining in Manar’s term will be filled by Democratic chairmen in the six counties that make up the district. Neither Sangamon County Democratic Chair Doris Turner or Macoupin County Democratic Chair Pam Monetti knew of any serious contenders for the appointment. The chairmen in the district are accepting applications through next week.

One name Democrats appear focused on is Decatur Mayor Julie Moore-Wolfe. Moore-Wolfe was appointed Mayor in 2015 following the death of then-Mayor Mike McElroy, who Manar defeated for the seat in 2012. Moore then won elections in 2017 and 2019. She is a former anchor at WAND-TV in Decatur.

Moore-Wolfe did not respond to a message from The Illinoize Monday night.

UPDATE (10:43 A.M.):

Springfield Alderman and Sangamon County Democratic Chair Doris Turner says she is considering seeking the appointment.
