Reps. Cabello, Edly-Allen Lose on Final Day of Vote Counts

Rep. John Cabello (R-Machesney Park) at a police memorial event this year. He fell behind Democrat Dave Vella Tuesday, the last day to count late-arriving mail-in ballots. Cabello will seek a discovery recount .

On the final day to county late-arriving mail-in ballots and approved provisional ballots, one State Representative saw his small lead disappear while another attempting to come back from an Election Night deficit fell short.

Rep. John Cabello (R-Machesney Park) held a 315-vote lead over Democrat Dave Vella when the sun came up Tuesday, but after a slew of ballots from Winnebago County were tallied, Vella had overcome the difference. Vella defeated Cabello by 239 votes.

Vella told TV station WREX “I'm so happy. I'm so honored that I'm able to do this job. I've been working for the last 2 years and I've been thinking about it for the last 20. I'm just really relieved and happy and just looking forward to it.”

Cabello says he will ask for a discovery recount in the race.

Illinois does not have an automatic recount provision, so Cabello will seek retabulation of 10% of precincts in the district. He can use any of those findings to petition a judge to order a full recount in the race.

Meanwhile, Rep. Mary Edly-Allen (D-Libertyville) who had nearly closed a 4,000-vote gap since Election Day in her race against Republican Chris Bos fell short of the challenger. Edly-Allen was trailing by 1,155 votes with one Cook County precinct yet to report late-arriving ballots.
