Rep. John Egofske (R-Lemont), the Lemont Mayor who was appointed to replace former House GOP Leader Jim Durkin earlier this year, will resign Friday after serving just nine months in the General Assembly.

Egofske had already announced he wouldn’t seek a full term next year, but will exit the legislature sooner than planned.

“I want to thank our residents for the opportunity to proudly serve our district over the past year,” Egofske said in a statement. “I continue to be an advocate for common-sense policies that prioritize fiscal responsibility, economic development, public safety, and lower property taxes.”

Egofske did not return a message Monday night asking for the reason he is stepping away. He did say he would remain Mayor of Lemont, where he has led the village since 2017.

Republicans recruited Senate GOP staffer and former Mrs. America Nicole La Ha Zwiercan to run for Egofske’s seat next year. She’s widely expected to receive the appointment to the seat, though she did not confirm her plans when contacted Monday night.

The race is expected to be one of the most watched in the General Assembly next year. Democrats have recruited Suzanne Akhras, Founder & Executive Director of the Syrian Community Network, to run in the district. President Trump won the district by two points in 2020. The district runs from Western Springs in the north to Homer Glen to the south.
