Rep. Ann Williams Jumps in Speaker's Race
If Michael Madigan isn’t re-elected as Speaker of the House, the chances are growing that Illinois will have its first female Speaker.
Rep. Ann Williams (D-Chicago) announced Wednesday morning she’s adding her name to the list of challengers to Madigan when the 102nd General Assembly convenes for the first time next week.
In a release, Williams says she wants to lead the chamber “collaboratively.”
“I believe I am the right person to lead as we shape the next chapter of the House Democratic Caucus,” Williams said. “Our already significant fiscal challenges and economic disparities have only been amplified due to COVID and the economic fallout. We need an experienced, pragmatic leader who can unify our caucus and build a bridge for the future.”
Williams as a former Assistant Attorney General to Madigan’s daughter, Lisa. She was elected to the House in 2010 and represents a heavily liberal district on the north side of Chicago.
Williams joins Rep. Stephanie Kifowit (D-Oswego) and likely candidate Rep. Kathleen Willis (D-Addison) in the effort to overthrow Madigan, who has been Speaker all but two years since 1983.
