Former State Senator Terry Link (D-Vernon Hills) pleaded guilty to filing a false tax return in U.S. District Court in Chicago Wednesday.

Former State Senator Terry Link (D-Vernon Hills), who resigned from the Senate Saturday after facing federal indictment and mounting political pressure from Lake County Democrats, pleaded guilty in federal court Wednesday.

In the plea agreement, released by the U.S. Attorney’s office, Link entered a voluntary guilty plea to filing a false tax return. He admits to filing a false tax return for calendar year 2016 and under reporting his personal income by around $100,000.

Link admitted to using around $75,000 on personal expenses from his campaign account.

He faces up to 3 years in prison for the charge, but may not be sentenced to prison. He has agreed to cooperate with the federal government on other proceedings. Many believe Link was a legislator who wore a “wire” in the investigation that took down former State Representative Luis Arroyo (D-Chicago).

Neither the U.S. Attorney’ s Office or Link responded to requests for comment.
