Illinois Republicans allege former Rep. LaToya Greenwood, who is hoping to make a comeback next year after losing her Metro East seat in 2022, took part in a “pattern of fraud” while gathering petition signatures.

The Illinois GOP was behind the challenge to Greenwood’s petitions, where she’s hoping to knock off freshman Rep. Kevin Schmidt (R-Millstadt).

The full challenge wasn’t available late Monday, but we’re told the GOP is challenging Greenwood’s petitions based on “the signatures collected by a number of circulators, including Greenwood herself.”

Wavey Lester, who lost a Senate race in 2022, filed the petition challenge. He claimed Greenwood is trying to “take advantage” of the system, though doesn’t give details.

"No one deserves to be on the ballot if they or their campaign use corrupt or dishonest means to get there,” he said in a statement. “That is why I am filing this objection, the people of East St. Louis and the 114th District deserve honest and trustworthy candidates for office who will genuinely advocate for our interests."

The House Democrats campaign arm did not respond to a request for comment and Greenwood couldn’t be reached Monday.
