Final Election Results Counted Today

Rep. John Cabello (R-Machesney Park) holds a 315-vote lead on his Democratic challenger. Final uncounted ballots must be processed today.

Two weeks after Election Day, county clerks and election authorities from around the state will count remaining ballots and there are a few races for the state legislature that could still flip as final votes come in.

Rep. John Cabello (R-Machesney Park) holds a perilous 315-vote lead over Democrat Dave Vella in the Rockford area district. The City of Rockford, which operates its own election commission, has counted all but around 600 outstanding provisional ballots. It’s not clear how many of those will be considered valid. Around 5,100 mail-in ballots will be counted in the rest of Winnebago County, but the county is split into 4 House Districts and a breakdown of where the votes belong has not been made available.

Meanwhile, mail-in ballots have helped Rep. Mary Edly-Allen (D-Libertyville) close a 4,300-vote Election Night deficit to Republican Chris Bos. Bos now leads Edly-Allen by 1,151-votes as of Tuesday morning. Nearly all of the district is in Lake County which has around 5,000 ballots left to count. There are 9 House Districts in Lake County, so there may not be enough remaining votes for Edly-Allen to close the gap.

It does not appear enough votes exist for Rep. Diane Pappas (D-Itasca) to overcome her deficit to Republican Seth Lewis. It is also unlikely Democrat Maggie Trevor overcomes her deficit to Rep. Tom Morrison (R-Palatine) or for Democrat Harry Benton to overcome Rep. Mark Batinick (R-Plainfield). Ballots that arrive in the mail today, as long as they were postmarked by November 3, can still be counted, so it is possible more ballots in each of those races could arrive.

The Associated Press has called the 14th Congressional District for Congresswoman Lauren Underwood (D-Naperville), who appears to have defeated Republican State Senator Jim Oberweis. Oberweis’ campaign has signaled it will pursue a discovery recount in the race, so they will hope to cut in to her 4,671-vote lead.

Keep our Legislative Race Tracker up on your computer throughout the day and we’ll be keeping an eye on all the outstanding races throughout the day.
