Federal prosecutors argued in court documents Monday that Tim Mapes, the longtime Chief of Staff to former House Speaker Michael Madigan should spend up to five years in prison for perjury and obstruction of justice charges.
But Mapes’s attorneys argued in their own filing Monday Mapes should only be sentenced to time served (though he hasn’t served any time in jail) and “significant” community service charges.
Prosecutors say Mapes made “calculated and deliberate” lies to a federal grand jury to protect Madigan, while his attorneys argue sending the 70-year-old to prison would “inflict undue additional suffering and hardship” on Mapes and his family.
In their filing, Mapes’ attorneys say he continues to maintain his innocence.
His sentencing is scheduled for February 12.
