Constitutional Questions Raised About Elected Chicago Public School Board

When the Senate unveiled a new Chicago Public School Board map last week, it went along with language that could have provided half of the board to be elected in 2024 and half of the board to be appointed by the Mayor.
“That would absolutely have gone to court,” one legislative Democrat said Tuesday. “We were gonna get sued.”
Senate President Don Harmon filed an amendment yesterday to stagger two and four year terms in the initial election.
It was expected the Senate could have taken up the bill last night, but they adjourned without calling it. We’re told Democrats are expecting to move the bill this morning and House Democrats will probably go along with the plan.
