A battle could be brewing among Republicans in their efforts to hold on to a suburban legislative district.
Rep. John Egofske (R-Lemont), who was appointed earlier this year to replace former House Republican Leader Jim Durkin, announced earlier this month he would not seek a full term.
House Republicans quickly anointed Nicole La Ha Zwiercan, a Senate communications staffer, former Homer Glen village board member, and former Mrs. America, as their preferred candidate.
But, we’re told Burr Ridge Mayor Gary Grasso is circulating petitions to run in the GOP primary. Grasso previously finished second in the 2022 GOP primary for the 6th Congressional District and lost the 2018 GOP primary for Attorney General.
He did not return a message from The Illinoize Monday.
Grasso’s potential candidacy is giving some top Republicans heartburn as, we’re told, they don’t want to expend resources in a primary in a competitive district.
The district runs from Homer Glen to the south to Western Springs in the north and includes all or parts of Lemont, Darien, Burr Ridge, and Willowbrook. President Trump won the district by about two points in 2020.
